Photomath (or “Fotomat”) is a mathematical photography competition organized by the European School of Alicante since 2012 by its coordinators, Alexandre Scherpereel and María Remedios González.

Its purpose and educational value for students studying Mathematics in Secondary School are inspired by the International Mathematical Photography Competition, organized and promoted by I.E.S. Paulo Abrantes in Lisbon (Portugal), and held annually in that city.

Following its discontinuation in 2018 and thanks to the positive response from other European Schools—and the subsequent expansion of the internal contest to include more interested students—Photomath has become the forerunner of EURO-Photomath: a competition open to all students from European Schools (and Accredited Schools), encouraging increasingly diverse and significant participation.

In 2023, on the occasion of the 20th Anniversary of the European School of Alicante, its current coordinator, Alexandre Scherpereel, presented a comprehensive retrospective of the first ten years of this annual event, which continues to grow stronger and more appreciated within our school community.
